At the death of Sir Aubrey Shenstone, an impoverished and improvident Royalist nobleman, his son, Cyril, inherits nothing more than his father's title, and must work as a clerk for various London tradesman. Honest, hardworking, and quick-thinking, he uncovers the plots of thieves and deceivers, diverts a fire-ship in a sea-battle with the Dutch, serves as a doctor's assistant during the Plague, and prevents the murder of one of his friends. He is serverly wounded in the sea-battle, and later contracts the Plague, but survives all and recieves back as a gift - the consequence of his industry, resourcefulness, self-sacrifice, and discreation - the estates that his father had lost.
