THE KEY Study Guide for English 30-1 is specifically designed to assist students all year in preparing for quizzes, unit tests, and the provincial diploma exam. It is 100% aligned with the Alberta curriculum and focuses primarily on preparing students for the written response and reading comprehension components of the provincial diploma exam.

THE KEY Study Guide for English 30-1 is 100% aligned with the Alberta curriculum which encompasses reading, listening, viewing, writing, speaking, and representing. The diploma exam consists of two parts, Part A: Written Response and Part B: Reading Comprehension. The suggestions and strategies for approaching each of these sections should be used in conjunction with curriculum concepts and content studied in the classroom.



Written Response and Reading Comprehension sections of the provincial diploma exam have been analyzed to gain a strong understanding of the critical elements of each section.

Understanding prose, Shakspeare, and poetry




THE KEY includes Part B of the June 1998 and January 2004 diploma exams. Students may use them to become familiar with provincial exam format and rigor. Detailed solutions are provided for all questions. Solutions show the processes and/or ideas used in arriving at the correct answers and may help students gain a better understanding of the concepts that are being tested.



The appendices include literary terms, exam ‘'directing words'', and a review of parts of speech.



Two new sections have been added to THE KEY to enhance student achievement and success. KEY Factors Contributing to School Success provides students with suggestions for reaching their potential at school, identifying their particular learning style, maximizing their study time, and reviewing notes effectively. The section includes a checklist to help students assess their strategies for success.



KEY Strategies for Success on Exams focuses on preparing students to write exams. This section provides students with study options for exam preparation, descriptions of common exam question formats, tips for to common question formats and directing words, suggestions for managing test anxiety, strategies to use before and during an exam, and tips for selected subject areas.
