Part 1:

This story follows three best friends: Billy Coleman and his two hound dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, on an adventure through the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma. After saving every penny from working on the farm, Billy buys two coonhound pups. The three friends then enter the town's semi-annual coon hunt and prove victorious after facing overwhelming odds. They capture the wily ghost coon and win the coveted gold cup.

Part 2:

When Billy (Doug McKeon) returns home from World War II after having his leg amputated, he becomes a bitter man. Grandfather returns (Wilford Brimley) in this sequel, and tries to make Billy's situation a little easier by buying him a couple of redbone hound puppies. After resisting them, Billy finally bonds with the puppies. Then, a young neighbor boy asks Billy to teach him how to hunt raccoons and Billy shows the boy how to hunt properly.
