Mott Media's McGuffey's Readers are the 1830's version and are printed with Gold Embossed Bindings and the Original Woodcut Artwork. Biblically based and character building, these readers tend to be at an advanced level. Boxed hardcover 8 Volume Set includes: Primer, Pictorial Primer, First, Second, Third & Fourth Reader, Progressive Speller, and Parent- Teacher guide by Dr Ruth Beechick. The Teacher's Guide teaches how McGuffey's Readers correspond to the stages of reading, how to teach phonics, and what to do to help a child at each stage of reading. There's also tips on integrating penmanship, language arts, and spelling with the Readers.


The Primer begins with the alphabet, while the First Reader is used in the second and third grades. The Second Reader covers third grade through fifth grade reading levels. The Third Reader develops thinking skills and the richer vocabulary of grades six through eight. After mastering this, the student is reading better than most high school students. The Fourth Reader may be used at high school level, although some schools use it with good readers in junior high. The Progressive Speller begins with basic phonics and progresses to advanced vocabulary worthy of a graduate student making it the only spelling book you will ever need.
