Five in a Row
Canadian Home Education Resources
When Moms ask what I would have used to teach my 4 to 8 year old, I have to say my favorite unit study is still Five in a Row. A literature based unit study Five in a Row is now being enjoyed by over 50,000 children around the world!
When a group of home school moms get together and the talk turns to Five in a Row, you will hear comments such as “I love Five in a Row!!” and “My kids love Five in a Row!”
If you are new to Five in a Row, let me tell you a little bit about the program. It was developed by Jane Claire Lambert, a home school veteran of 12 years. Each week you read to your child one of the fifty five stories that have won various awards such as Newberry Awards for excellence in literature and Caldecott Awards for excellence in illustrations.
Good literature is a wonderful way to introduce our children to the world around us. Jane Lambert has taken these classic children’s stories and successfully developed unit studies which include art, history, vocabulary, geography, science, character qualities, math, language arts, literature studies, health, and writing. All of these favorite classics used are available through our catalogue service or the library.
Also included are a suggested schedule, weekly planner, maps, and appendix full of helps for each week. The three volumes could be completed in a year if you include the summer weeks, or you could go for a year and a half if you take summer, Christmas and other breaks. You will need to add math and phonics instruction to complete your program.

A Reason For Science
A Reason For Science® was designed for children, the handwork of an infinite God - young minds created with an unlimited capacity to think, to learn, and to discover!
Because of this emphasis on children and how they learn
A Reason For Science® is based on a different paradigm from the traditional textbook approach. Why? In an effort to address standards and accountability, many of today's science textbooks seem to get learning backwards. They focus primarily on building a knowledge base, assuming students will later attach meaning to memorized facts. The problem is that few elementary students master information presented this way because they simply never become engaged with the material.
A New Paradigm!
By contrast, A Reason For Science® is based on the premise that learning science is an active process. It's something children do, not something done to them.
According to the National Science Education Standards, "... active science learning means shifting emphasis away from teachers presenting information and covering science topics. The perceived need to include all the topics and information... is in direct conflict with the central goal of having students learn scientific knowledge with understanding."
To paraphrase William Butler Yeats, "Teaching is not filling a pail. It's lighting a fire!"

A Reason for Spelling
Every weekly lesson begins with a story — a contemporary theme story that develops key principles found in that week’s Scripture verse. Daily lessons continue to build on this theme and help make learning to spell FUN! In addition, A Reason For® Spelling encourages regular personal writing activities in a values-based setting. This gives children a meaningful context for focusing on correct spelling.
Incorporates a variety of successful teaching techniques: daily practice, self-correction, visual imaging, detailed student feedback, learning games, the test/study/test sequence, and much more. It also includes special activities in every lesson to help motivate visual, auditory, tactile, and multi-faceted learners.

Barry Stebbing
This wonderful art series is designed with a Christian Worldview in which homeschool parents can feel confident as an art instructor. I found them to be a great combination of the fundamentals presented in many art programs that we have used. each well laid out lesson is simple, precise, and can be a daily or weekly exercise. A check list of objectives and a scripture verse or quotation is included in each lesson.
I Can Do All Things, Feed My Sheep and the Book of Many Colors are all three year programs which include paint cards. Permission is given to photocopy, however the extra heavy stock paint cards that are recommended for each child do not photocopy well. Barry says that these three programs are his most popular.

D.I.V.E. CDs
DIVE Into Math and Science
Digital Interactive Video Education
"With the Right Tools, Even the Tough Roads Become Fun and Easy!"
Dive Into Math teaches every lesson in each Saxon Math textbook. Although not published by or affiliated with Saxon Math, DIVE CDs offer lectures on CD presented on a computer whiteboard that looks and sounds as though you are attending a lecture in a real classroom.
DIVE lessons are short - 10 to 20 minutes long. Students can easily pause, rewind and fast forward the lesson with a click of the mouse. The student stays actively involved during the entire lesson, as they are either reading along with the instructor, taking notes, solving problems, or rewinding / fast forwarding as necessary.
DIVE Into Math chose Saxon Mathcurriculum because "we believe it is the best curriculum to prepare a student for college entrance exams and college level math. Saxon problem sets and tests contain a variety of problems, which is good preparation for taking tests like the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. We believe the review system implemented by Saxon is very benificial and greatly increases student retention of the material, which will help any student learn math better. Saxon also integrates geometry with Algebra which ensures that the student will never have to stop learning algebra to learn geometry."
DIVE CDs are available on current editions of Saxon Math. DIVE Into Math CDs are also available for older editions of Saxon Math as a special order item.
All DIVE Into Math CDs work on Windows and Mac operating systems.
